Mr. Proctor stated that the Prairie dogs are a keystone species of the Great Plains. The Prairie dog is also a food source for a number of other species. Those species include the black-footed ferret, swift fox and ferruginous hawks.
According to Mr. Proctor, the potential lies in state conservation plans. Nebraskans who are interested in conserving a healthy prairie ecosystem should contact Governor Mike Johanns and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
