Our Conservation Work >
Overview
Our core program activities revolve around grassland conservation public education and communications, research and advocacy at the local, state, regional and national level.
- In addition to our website, we produce a quarterly Grasslands 2010 E-Newsletter in conjunction with the Northern Great Plains Program of the World Wildlife Fund.
- In the past we have published the Green Fire Journal, which features grassland and species conservation news and commentary. We also comment periodically on the editorial page in local and regional news media outlets on current conservation topics. These pieces can be found in our our Resources section.
- We periodically sponsor public presentations by speakers who address current grassland conservation topics. These programs have frequently been sponsored by the Center for Great Plains Studies and the Center for Grassland Studies, inter-disciplinary programs at the University of Nebraska. Information on current and past events can be found on this website.
- We also periodically publish analysis and research on topics relevant to grassland conservation and rural community development. Some of those papers are archived on the website in our Resources section.
- We facilitate dialogue and interaction between researchers, community leaders, and agency personnel about methods and means to conserve the grassland biome by organizing small, informal meetings.
- We provide comments to local, state and federal agencies, like the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, relating to the management of grasslands and grassland species. We also participate in agency processes representing conservation interests. Presently, we are a member of the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project’s Partnership Committee, an effort sponsored by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to develop a state biodiversity plan.
