Accomplishments

  • With the World Wildlife Fund, one of the country's largest and most respected conservation groups, we launched Grasslands 2010, a multi-year effort which seeks to increase the amount of native prairies in the Northern Great Plains dedicated to parks, wildlife refuges, and other protected areas from 1.5% currently to 10%. This will significantly increase the amount of land available fro native species like the black footed ferret, American bison, pronghorn antelope, elk, and numerous species of grassland birds and for outdoor recreation like hiking, wildlife watching, and related activities.
  • Released a 60-page research report that documented the economic benefits to rural areas of creating large-scale prairie conservation areas for wildlife and outdoor recreation.
  • We've gained the respect of our hometown newspaper, the Lincoln Journal Star, which has supported editorially our work on numerous occasions. Many of these editorials can be found on the website.
  • We sponsor many different types of public education and outreach programs, including an annual lecture in Lincoln, Nebraska on "Grassland Conservation and Sustainable Communities." We seek ways to save grassland biodiversity and improve lives of people on the land.
  • As part of our education work, we have an active communications program that puts our information on grassland conservation locally, nationally, and globally

Other Current Campaigns

  • We are trying to develop a program to raise awareness about the conservation status and future prospects of grasslands throughout the world, including the grasslands of Mongolia, southern and eastern Africa, the pampas in South America, and the Northern Great Plains, including Nebraska's magnificent Sandhills region
  • We are trying to develop innovative and collaborative arrangements with cattle ranchers in Nebraska that improve grassland habitat for wildlife, and create new income opportunities for ranchers that are win-win for people and wildlife.
