Local view: With farm subsidies threatened, it's time to make plans for land
The WTO's recent ruling that some U.S. cotton subsidies are illegal signals big changes may soon blow across the Great Plains landscape. If the cotton ruling is upheld on appeal, much of U.S. farm subsidy policy may be on its way out sooner than expected.
Although hard numbers are difficult to find, trade policy being more sophistry than science, a World Bank report suggests, that while the overall impact of free trade on the agricultural economy may be positive, benefiting mainly specialized livestock feeding operations and food processors, it will likely mean lower grain prices.
